After WWII, a group of veterans came back to find their home in Athens, Tennessee under the oppressive hand of a political machine that rigged elections, doled out cash, and beat up political opponents.
Ahead of a key election, the veterans asked for help from state and national law enforcement, but no help came. The veterans sent their own poll watches to ensure fair play, but were met with violence from the machine cronies.
As the machine made it clear they weren't going to let the election proceed fairly, the veterans took matters into their own hands and liberated the ballot box by force, restoring democracy to Athens and all of McGinn County.
